The Theory Test

TAKE THE TEST ONLINE

History:

The Theory Test for Car Drivers and Motorcyclists was introduced in July 1996. It was designed to improve road safety. Included in the test is driver's attitude, traffic signs and regulations, effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on driver's behaviour, the safety and environmental aspects of vehicles. As from 14th November 2002 the Hazard Perception Test was added to the Theory Test.

Multiple Choice:
The first part of the Theory Test consists of 50 randomly picked multiple-choice questions from the DSA question bank, in which you must get at least 43 questions correct to pass, you have 40 minutes to complete this section. No two theory tests have the same questions, and can be about any of the the rules written in the highway code or the above subjects. Once you have completed this part of the test you will have around a 3 minute break, at which time you will then start your Hazard Perception Test.

Hazard Perception:

The test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting about one minute. The clips feature various types of hazards, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. You should respond by pressing a mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing that may result in the driver having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction. The earlier the developing hazard is spotted, and a response made, the higher the score. Candidates can score up to five marks on each hazard and the test contains 15 scoreable hazards (1 clip will contain 2 hazards). The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75 for car drivers and motorcycle riders. Candidates are given their results when they have finished both parts of the test and have returned to the waiting room. Once you have passed your Theory Test you must pass your Practical Test within 2 years, if this is not achieved you will have to retake the Theory Test.

NOTE: You need to pass BOTH PARTS of this test at the same sitting, otherwise you'll need to re-book and take the test again.. The current fee for this test is £30. The test can be taken at any number of test centres all over the UK, the nearest to Warwick is at:
